LASER World of PHOTONICS: Industry Days Online event presents exclusive market studies and technology trends

June 8.2021
  • Free platform for information and exchange in the photonics industry from June 21 to 24, 2021

  • Science meets Industry: Fascinating presentations and roundtables

  • Keynote by Professor Dr. Reinhard Genzel, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics

With the LASER World of PHOTONICS Industry Days, Messe München is offering a free online event specially for the photonics community alongside the World of Photonics Congress. Congress and Industry Days will be opened by Professor Reinhard Genzel. Highlights of the program are current market figures and outlooks for the photonics trends of tomorrow.

Messe München is reducing the waiting time for the next regular LASER World of PHOTONICS 2022 in Munich: With Industry Days, the photonics industry will have a digital meeting point that will take place alongside the scientific World of Photonics Congress, which is also being held online. Both events are closely interrelated, so congress attendees will be able to take part in the practice-oriented program of Industry Days. In addition to the industry program, participants of the free Industry Days will also be offered several highlights from the congress and can contact renowned scientists using the digital platform' s matchmaking function.

The program in detail:

Monday, June 21, 2021

Keynote by Nobel Prize winner Professor Dr. Reinhard Genzel (Max Planck In- stitute for Extraterrestrial Physics) at 11:15 a.m. and the presentation of the following prizes thereafter: The Herbert Walther Award, Bernard J. Couillaud Prize and WLT Award.

Tuesday, June 22, 2021: Markets and Innovations

How did the market for industrial laser systems develop in 2020? What effects did the pandemic have on the various branches of industry in Germany? These and similar questions will be the focus of the first session of the World of PHOTONICS Industry Days on June 22, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. The speakers will be Dr. Arnold Mayer (Optech Consulting), Jörg Mayer (CEO of SPECTARIS) and Dr. Moritz Förster, Managing Director of the Working Committee Laser and Laser Systems for Material Processing at VDMA.

The afternoon of the first day will be devoted to new technologies. Professor Dr. Michael Totzeck (Carl Zeiss) will begin with an overview of the new ideas in optical technologies. The big topics here are digitalization, miniaturization and automation in production and research. Afterwards, Professor Dr. Constantin Häfner (Fraunhofer ILT) will speak about the most exciting laser class right now, the ultrashort pulse laser, and its scaling into the kW range.

The highlight of the day will be a panel discussion on the topic of “Future Challenges – What Challenges Can Laser Technology Expect in the Coming Years?” Participants will include Professors Häfner and Totzeck. The event will be moderated by science journalist Dr. Andreas Thoß.

Wednesday, June 23, 2021

This day will be devoted to biophotonics and its potential applications in the area of infection control. Starting at 9:00 a.m., Professor Dr. Jürgen Popp from the Leibniz Institute of Photonic Technology will provide information about solutions that will make life safer and healthier with the help of light.

Thursday, June 24, 2021: Quantum Technologies

The last day will provide information about trends and research programs on the topic of quantum technologies. The program will start at 10:00 a.m. on June 24 via livestream, with presentations by the major project sponsors. Dr. Peter Soldan (VDITZ) will present the current research program of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, and Dr. Robert Axmann (DLR) will talk about the DLR- Initiative Quantum Computing. Afterwards, the European Quantum Industry Consortium and the Munich Quantum Valley will introduce themselves. The session will conclude with a presentation by Professor Dr. Rainer Müller (Technical University of Braunschweig) on the topic of “Education – Future Quantum Workforce.”

The second session on quantum technologies will start at 2:00 p.m. on the same day and will focus on the industry' s view of the various quantum technologies.

Speakers here will include Dr. Heike Riel, head of quantum research for Europe in IBM' s research department, and startup founder Dr. Stefan Hengesbach (Q.ant). A panel discussion with speakers on the topic of “Quantum – Quo Vadis?” will round off the program of Industry Days and also offer a preview of the new exhibition area World of QUANTUM, which will open its doors for the first time as part of LASER World of PHOTONICS 2022 in Munich.

Platform for Individual Exchange

Following the presentations, registered participants will be able to ask the presenters questions live. In addition, the participants will also have the opportunity to communicate directly on the online platform of World of Photonics Congress. Networking and matchmaking functions will be available for this purpose.
